Oral Cancer is a Killer: Early Detection Saves Lives

Oral Cancer is a Killer: Early Detection Saves Lives

by Shearly (SU)
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 50,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year alone. Of those, just over half are expected to still be alive in five years. As with all forms of cancer, the earlier it is diagnosed or the earlier potential symptoms are found, the higher the chances for survival. Survival rates for oral cancer have risen in the last decade. Oral cancer is part of a class of cancer commonly known as head and neck cancers, and make up about 85% of all cancers within that group. The rate of death for this kind of cancer is in large part attributed to the fact that it is often discovered quite late in its development. Dentists, using routine dental screenings are on the front lines of those who can spot oral cancer at an early stage, before it has a chance to metastasize to deeper structures of the head and throat, such as the lymph glands.

Gingivitis is a common gum disorder that causes red and inflamed gums, or gingiva. Patients with gingivitis may find that their gums bleed when they brush their teeth or that they have developed halitosis, or bad breath. They may also find that their gums are tender to the touch, or notice a reduction in their gums as they recede from the teeth. Although, in the very early stages symptoms can be so mild that they’re not so easily noticeable.

According to a Harvard medical study, gum disease, or periodontitis–a common, but preventable disease that destroys the gums and teeth–is linked to damaged blood vessels, and the heart as well. The same study also found that periodontitis has also been linked to pregnant women giving birth prematurely, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and a host of other medical problems, such as pneumonia.

by Shearly (SU)
Many of us do not understand the importance of brushing their toddler’s teeth, the belief that the tooth will be lost anyways make the necessary steps to do it right that much more irrational. However, brushing incorrectly could have big consequences, such as premature loss of the teeth. Premature tooth loss could affect eating habits, speech, and even the way new teeth come in. But what should you do to prevent that from happening?
