How AI is Revolutionizing Dentistry for High-Tech Dentists

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming nearly every industry – from finance and transportation to medicine and healthcare. Dentistry is no exception.

At Marion Smile Center in Zelienople, PA, Dr. Mark Marion and our team are committed to staying at the forefront of advanced dental technology while preserving the trust, transparency, and compassionate care our patients expect. As AI in dentistry continues to evolve, Dr. Marion has been actively researching how artificial intelligence can enhance diagnostic precision, improve treatment planning, and strengthen patient understanding.

We want our patients throughout Zelienople, Harmony, Butler County, and the greater Pittsburgh area to know — we are carefully evaluating AI technology with intention, research, and professional oversight.

What Is Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry?

Artificial Intelligence in dentistry uses advanced machine learning algorithms to analyze dental X-rays and imaging. By studying millions of radiographs, AI dental software can detect patterns and highlight areas that may indicate:

  • Interproximal cavities (between-the-teeth decay)
  • Early-stage decay
  • Bone loss associated with periodontal disease
  • Calculus (tartar) buildup
  • Overhangs and restoration margins
  • Existing fillings and structural compromise
  • Bone level measurements with color-coded severity

Currently, FDA-cleared AI platforms analyze:

  • Bitewing X-rays
  • Periapical (PA) X-rays
  • Panoramic (PAN) X-rays

These systems provide colorful visual overlays that make it easier for patients to see what the dentist sees. We use cutting-edge CBCT xray equipment and will wait to add dental A.I. software at our office when the CBCT A.I. gets FDA approval which is projected for later this year or early next year.

But it’s important to emphasize: AI assists with detection. Dentists diagnose and make treatment decisions.

How Marion Smile Center is Evaluating AI from Every Angle

We want our patients throughout Zelienople, Harmony, Butler County, and the greater Pittsburgh area to know — we are carefully evaluating AI technology with intention, research, and professional oversight.

We have researched the top 2 largest and most widely known Dental A.I. Companies and had them demonstrate their software to several Marion Smile Center team members for each of their unique perspectives.  Rather than simply reading about AI tools online, Dr. Mark Marion personally scheduled and attended informational Zoom meetings with these companies to have in-depth conversations focused on understanding how AI truly functions inside a clinical setting: Kyle from Pearl and Austin from Overjet.

During our discussion with Kyle from Pearl regarding their Second Opinion AI integration, we learned:
  • Pearl’s AI has demonstrated approximately 95% diagnostic accuracy in university-backed studies, including research involving UCLA.
  • Pearl is actively developing AI for CBCT (3D imaging), with anticipated FDA clearance targeted for 2026.
  • Future updates aim to include AI detection on intraoral photographs (the handheld imaging photos taken inside the mouth with our wands).
  • Their reporting tools allow visual overlays and PDF exports that support transparent patient communication.
  • Percentage breakdowns of compromised tooth structure are currently shown as a total metric, with deeper breakdown capabilities in development.

Kyle also shared that Pearl is working toward additional integration features for practices using Carestream/SoftDent systems.

During our conversation with Austin from Overjet regarding their Vision AI integration, we discussed:

  • In clinical research and FDA-validated benchmarks, AI systems like Overjet have demonstrated sensitivity and specificity rates approaching or exceeding 90% when detecting caries and quantifying bone loss on dental radiographs — often matching or exceeding the diagnostic performance of human clinicians.
  • Overjet’s FDA-cleared AI for caries and bone loss detection on 2D radiographs.
  • Their unique position in the industry, as Overjet licenses AI technology to certain insurance companies for claim evaluation assistance.
  • How Overjet’s percentage-based measurements may help standardize documentation when submitting claims.
  • Their projected timeline for expanded CBCT analysis in 2026.

Austin noted that, in some instances, AI-supported insurance integration can facilitate automatic preliminary approvals, which may improve documentation efficiency and minimize manual processing delays.

These conversations gave us valuable insight into how AI dental software functions clinically, administratively, and ethically.

Dr. Marion was impressed by the better quality of X-ray images: You can’t fix what you can’t see! He determined which had the highest quality images and the one that patients can view the easiest on our treatment room monitors to “see” what he sees: When patients understand the why behind recommended dental treatment, they more often follow through with that treatment.

Our Technology Manager determined which AI package would work best with our primary dental software. Our primary software is the hub for all our additional software to be launched from. She wants seamless integration for better workflow for our clinicians.

Our Business Consultant analyzed it from a workflow and insurance submission perspective to determine if insurance companies will work with AI generated images and annotations. After all, patients want to use their insurance wherever there is coverage.

Leading AI Dental Software Platforms

The AI in dentistry space is growing rapidly. Several companies are contributing to advancements in diagnostic support, including:

While all are advancing artificial intelligence in dentistry, Dr. Mark Marion chose to focus initial conversations on Pearl and Overjet due to:

  • Their national adoption and market presence
  • Published accuracy data
  • Active FDA pathways
  • Integration compatibility
  • Strong patient-facing visualization tools

From a patient-experience standpoint, both platforms are highly comparable in what they detect: decay, bone loss, calculus, margins, restorations, and structural measurements.

From a visual clarity standpoint, we found Pearl’s interface slightly more intuitive and easier for patients to understand at a glance — though both systems are advanced and clinically impressive.

Beyond X-Rays: How AI Assists Throughout a Modern Dental Practice

While much of the conversation around Artificial Intelligence in dentistry focuses on AI cavity detection and radiographic analysis, AI technology is expanding into many other areas of dental practice management and patient care.

Today, AI systems are being used to:

  • Assist front desk teams with automated appointment confirmations and recall reminders
  • Help manage missed calls through intelligent text-back systems
  • Support insurance verification and documentation workflows
  • Analyze treatment acceptance patterns and improve case presentation clarity
  • Draft clinical notes and streamline charting
  • Identify patients who may be overdue for preventive care
  • Optimize scheduling efficiency

In many practices across the country, AI functions quietly behind the scenes – improving communication, reducing administrative burden, and allowing dental teams to focus more time on patient care.

At Marion Smile Center, Dr. Mark Marion views AI not as a replacement for team members, but as a supportive tool that enhances efficiency and accuracy – while keeping the human element at the center of dentistry.

How AI Will Enhance Transparency at Marion Smile Center

When AI is integrated at Marion Smile Center in Zelienople, PA, our goal will be collaboration – not automation.

You will sit beside Dr. Mark Marion or one of our licensed providers as we review your X-rays together.

You will be able to see:

  • Color-coded areas of decay
  • Early-stage changes before they become painful
  • Bone level measurements with severity indicators
  • Calculus detection
  • Margins and overhangs
  • Overall structural percentages of compromised tooth structure

We want patients engaged in the process – asking questions and understanding exactly what is being recommended. AI makes dental findings more visual. Dr. Marion ensures they are interpreted appropriately.

What AI Does Not Currently Detect

At this time, neither Pearl nor Overjet has FDA clearance for detecting cysts, tumors, or lesions on panoramic or CBCT imaging.

However, both companies are actively developing expanded AI capabilities in 3D imaging, pending regulatory approval.

This highlights an important truth: AI is evolving — but dentist oversight remains essential.

AI and the Future of Marion Smile Center

At the same time we are evaluating AI integration, Marion Smile Center is undergoing an exciting renovation project to enhance our patient experience that includes:

  • Additional treatment rooms
  • An expanded dental lab
  • Enhanced sterilization capacity
  • Improved workflow efficiency

Dr. Mark Marion’s vision for Marion Smile Center includes both physical expansion and technological advancement. Artificial Intelligence is part of that forward-looking strategy. Our approach is intentional, ethical, and patient-centered.

Why a Dentist Will Always Lead the Process

Artificial Intelligence can:

  • Analyze radiographs quickly
  • Quantify findings
  • Highlight measurable changes

But it cannot:

  • Assess symptoms
  • Evaluate bite function
  • Consider medical history
  • Provide empathy
  • Make nuanced clinical decisions
At Marion Smile Center, Dr. Mark Marion remains fully responsible for every diagnosis and treatment plan. Technology supports our expertise. It does not replace it.
