FAQs About Teeth Whitening

Absolutely! Our whitening treatments are safe, gentle, and customized to your unique needs. We use advanced technology to ensure optimal results without compromising your enamel or overall dental health.

For best results, surface stains on the outside of your teeth should be removed before you begin professional whitening. This is done during an in-office professional cleaning appointment with one of our highly trained dental hygienists. If you’re interested in whitening and to save your valuable time, inform our team that you’d like to whiten at your next cleaning appointment so time can be reserved accordingly.

While you relax listening to music or a podcast, we first place cheek retractors in your mouth to ensure your lips and cheeks do not come in contact with your teeth. We then apply a special protective gel to your gums. That hardens and acts as a barrier to protect them. After, a professional whitening gel, containing 40% hydrogen peroxide (with potassium nitrate and fluoride for patient comfort), is meticulously applied to each tooth’s surface multiple times. Your teeth will continue to whiten for the next 48 hours. Please plan to not consume anything that would stain a white t-shirt during that time for best results (like red wine, coffee, berries, red sauce, etc). We recommend patients continue the whitening process with at-home trays (included) to make them even whiter, if they wish and for touch-ups to keep your smile bright!

With either one of our take home whitening systems, patients report noticeable improvements in their smile’s brightness in as little as 3-5 sessions. If you’ve never whitened before, we typically recommend them to be worn for 8-12 sessions within the 1st month, or when your teeth have reached their whitest potential.

Custom trays wear time: 20-30 minutes
Disposable trays wear time: 15-20 minutes

After using either system, just pop the trays in a day or two before a special event or whenever your teeth need a little brightening. Avoiding stain-causing foods and maintaining regular oral hygiene will extend the longevity of your whitening results.

Custom Trays: Our team begins the process by taking a precise scan of your mouth with our digital impression scanner, ensuring your trays fit snugly and comfortably. This personalized approach guarantees even and thorough coverage of your teeth, along with unmatched comfort during wear. One notable advantage of our custom-fit trays is their ability to whiten all your natural teeth, getting the solution in between the tight grooves and contacts. In contrast, standard whitening strips only cover parts of your teeth, leaving uneven results.

We use the highest concentration of the most comfortable and safest at-home whitening gel available – a professional-grade carbamide peroxide gel. This potent whitening agent is exclusively accessible through dental offices, making our solution more effective than generic alternatives. Simply wear the custom trays for 20-30 minutes per day, allowing the peroxide gel to perform its magic. As the gel soaks into the tooth, hydroxyl radicals penetrate the tooth’s surface and whiten the interior of stained teeth. Only by whitening the teeth from the inside out, will the results be longer lasting.

Disposable Trays: One box contains 10 days worth of whitening (10 upper trays, and 10 lower trays). Our disposable whitening trays are designed for instant use right out of the package. No need for syringes or messy applications – simply pop them in, and let the whitening process begin. These trays are powered by a 15% hydrogen peroxide whitening solution (with potassium nitrate and fluoride for patient comfort) with only 15-20 minute wear time, providing a convenient and reliable method to maintain your dazzling smile.
Disposable whitening trays are a fantastic choice for teens with mouths that are still changing and growing and aren’t quite ready to commit to Custom-Fit Whitening Trays, but want noticeably brighter, whiter teeth for Prom, Homecoming, or just want to feel more confident in their smile. We also recommend them routinely for our patients who want a whiter smile as they’re undergoing longer, more extensive treatment, such as clear aligners, crowns, veneers, implants, or partial dentures.
You can even whiten your teeth with braces using this system! These pre-filled trays will fit around your braces and will still effectively whiten your teeth. The special gel used in these trays does not have to be touching every tooth surface for it to whiten, it penetrates your tooth and works from the inside to distribute itself out to all surfaces.

Absolutely! Our team offers several options to help, depending on how sensitive your teeth are.

Rx Grade Toothpaste: At least a couple weeks before beginning to whiten, we recommend that you pick up a tube of prescription grade Clinpro™ 5000 with 1.1% sodium fluoride toothpaste (if you purchase it online, it is not the same strength and does not work the same). Right before bed, brush your teeth with a large pea-sized amount for 2 minutes, spit, and DO NOT RINSE. Leave the remaining toothpaste residue sit on your teeth so the fluoride can penetrate while you sleep to help reduce sensitivity. You can use it in the morning as well, just be sure not to consume anything for 30 minutes after brushing your teeth.

Enamelast™ Fluoride Varnish: At your professional cleanings, be sure to request that your dental hygienist apply this topical desensitizing fluoride varnish on your teeth. Since the product’s benefits only last a few months, be sure to request it at each cleaning to help treat tooth hypersensitivity.

At Marion Smile Center, we use Opalescence teeth whitening products. Over the years, we have researched, reviewed, and tested many professional products. Opalescence, in our opinion, is among the best and safest.

Benefits of the Opalescence teeth whitening products we use include:

  • Made in the USA. Opalescence whitening gels and syringes are produced right here in the U.S. at the Ultradent Products facility in Utah. Buying from a made-in-the-USA company means you’ll get fresh formulations – not a product that may have been held up or delayed by a third party. By supporting manufacturers doing business here, you’re helping our nation’s economy and helping provide jobs for hundreds of Americans who take pride in what they do.
  • Helps reduce tooth sensitivity. Many over-the-counter whitening products dehydrate your teeth, which can result in uncomfortable sensitivity for patients. Opalescence professional tooth whitening gel is made with a high water content to protect against dehydration that can occur during whitening. The high water content in Opalescence whitening gel is combined with potassium nitrate and fluoride to help reduce the likelihood of residual sensitivity for patients.
  • Gluten-free, certified kosher and sweetened with xylitol. These whitening products are gluten-free and kosher-certified to fit in with the varied lifestyles and beliefs of patients. Opalescence professional whitening gel is also sweetened with xylitol, a noncariogenic sugar substitute, for better oral health.

FAQs About Veneers and Crowns

At Marion Smile Center, we use state-of-the-art Emax veneers when possible, which are crafted from high-quality lithium disilicate and can be customized for each of our patients. This new material is better than porcelain or resin. It is stronger, mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth, is more translucent, and resists staining. Veneers are applied to only the front side of your tooth to make your smile more symmetrical and fix minor cosmetic imperfections.

Many dentists use crowns made of metal and/or porcelain, but at Marion Smile Center, we use crowns made of a superior material like zirconium for stronger, more durable, and natural-looking results. We take special pride in our ability to precisely match a crown or veneer to the color and shape of your surrounding teeth. Crowns are applied to cover and protect all sides of your tooth, including your chewing surface – think of it like a thimble covering your finger.

Veneers and crowns generally last between 7 and 15 years, but with proper care, regular dental visits, and good oral hygiene, can last much longer. Crowns and veneer can provide long-lasting beauty and functionality. Dr. Marion may recommend a night guard to protect them if you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, as this can cause a veneer to crack or chip or a crown to loosen.

The procedure is virtually pain-free, with most patients experiencing little to no discomfort. We use advanced techniques to ensure your comfort and offer a complete Comfort Menu for added relaxation during treatment.

Absolutely! We use the highest quality materials and personalize each veneer and crown to match your unique smile, ensuring they blend seamlessly with your natural teeth for a stunning, realistic look.

You may be a good candidate for veneers if your dental issues are relatively minor and don’t require more treatment than a cosmetic fix. Dr. Marion primarily uses them to conceal discoloration and other superficial issues. You may want to consider veneers to correct for the following types of dental issues:
⦁ Stains
⦁ Cracks
⦁ Gaps between teeth
⦁ Alignment issues
⦁ Small teeth

For veneers and crowns, the placement process usually takes two appointments, about 2 to 3 weeks apart. The process may involve a single tooth or multiple teeth, depending on your needs.

During your first visit, we will take a scan of your mouth and teeth using our digital impression scanner and send it electronically to our dental lab. A shade will also be chosen that will beautifully match your current teeth or, if doing a full smile makeover, may be even whiter. Dr. Marion will get the surface of your tooth ready for the veneer or crown. He will remove any cavities and build the tooth up with resin bonding material if necessary for the crown. Your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched. He will place a temporary veneer or crown over the tooth until the final is prepared.

At your second appointment, Dr. Marion will bond the final veneer or crown to your tooth and allow it to harden in place using a special light.

FAQs About Cosmetic Bondings

Cosmetic bonding is formed with  moldable composite resin material. This material is pliable, putty-like, and is colored and shaped to match the patient’s teeth and can be used to correct imperfections like gaps, chipped teeth, and discoloration. It is then hardened with a special curing light. Restoring a tooth with cosmetic bonding is less expensive than other cosmetic treatments and can be completed in a single visit to our office.

5-7 years, but can last longer with proper care. Keep in mind that even though bonding is very durable, it’s not as strong as your natural tooth enamel, so it could chip or crack with major trauma and may need to be touched up.

Not at all! The procedure is gentle, and most patients experience no discomfort. Sometimes anesthetic isn’t even needed for simple bonding procedures.

Immediately! You’ll leave your appointment with a beautifully enhanced smile—bonding provides instant, gorgeous results.

FAQs About Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are custom-crafted for a precise fit, making them ideal for both adults and teens. They’re perfect for addressing mild to moderate overcrowding or alignment issues. For more complex cases, such as severe underbite, overbite, or crossbite, additional treatment options may be recommended.

To begin, we’ll take precise digital impressions of your mouth and teeth using our scanner. From there, we’ll create a series of custom aligners, each designed to gradually shift your teeth into their ideal position. Made from clear, comfortable acrylic, these aligners fit snugly over your teeth and can be easily removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. Typically every couple weeks, you’ll put in a new set of aligners, each slightly adjusted to keep your smile moving forward.

The length of treatment depends on how much movement or rotation your teeth require. The more misaligned your teeth or bite, the longer it will take. On average, treatment lasts between 10 to 24 months. For adults who had braces as youngsters but have experienced minor shifting, clear aligners may be needed for a much shorter time.

There numerous advantages of clear aligners over braces, including:

  • Easy access for oral hygiene. Traditional straightening methods like braces can prevent you from properly cleaning your teeth, resulting in an increased risk of cavities and periodontal woes, such as gingivitis, hyperplasia, bone loss, and even tooth loss. Clear aligners, on the other hand, can be removed to allow you to brush and floss as you normally would.
  • Aligners are practically invisible. Braces present cosmetic challenges for those looking to straighten their teeth later in life, or during life events when your appearance is particularly important, such as for a wedding, reunion, or high-visibility work. Clear aligners aren’t obvious, so you can smile knowing you’re straightening your smile on the sly.
  • Say goodbye to the pain of sharp wires in your mouth. If you’ve ever had braces, or know someone else who has, you’re already aware of the discomfort associated with having bars and wires in the small, contained space of your mouth. Wax and topical pain relievers can only do so much for cuts, canker sores, and the pain of braces. With clear aligners, those days are over.
  • Aligners are a breath of fresh air, literally. Clear aligners don’t leave you susceptible to the sour breath associated with braces. Your aligners can be removed completely for thorough brushing and flossing whenever needed.

Once your clear aligner treatment is complete, we’ll create a custom clear retainer from a scan of your beautifully straightened teeth. You’ll wear your retainers daily for a period of time, then only at night to maintain your results and prevent any future shifting.

At Marion Smile Center, we proudly use SureSmile® clear aligners. While Dr. Marion was previously an Invisalign® provider and was pleased with the quality of their trays, we transitioned to SureSmile®  because it integrates seamlessly with our digital impression scanner—meaning no more goopy impressions for our patients! The digital workflow also allows for a quicker turnaround, so you get your trays faster and keep your treatment on track. Dr. Marion, our team, and our patients have all been very happy with the SureSmile®  application process, fit, and overall tray quality!
