Preventing Gum Disease in the Summer

June 15, 2018

For many people, summertime is all about having fun, going on vacation, and indulging in activities best enjoyed during warmer weather. But it’s also a season when maintaining your oral health may be the last thing on your mind.

Tips for Your Dental Health

In order to maintain proper oral hygiene, avoid bad breath, and prevent gum disease now and well beyond the summer months, follow these simple but effective measures:

· Brush your teeth often and properly. Purchase and use a new toothbrush every three months, one with softer bristles to protect your enamel and gums. Also, use floss and a tongue scraper to make sure your entire mouth stays clean and fresh. When brushing your teeth, always brush away from the gumline – brush downward on the upper teeth and brush upward on the lower teeth. Gently brush your tongue with the scraper after brushing your teeth.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day if not more often – definitely in the morning after breakfast and at night before bedtime. Spend at least two minutes each time you brush to be sure your teeth are thoroughly clean.

· Steer clear of sugary drinks. A cool glass of lemonade or a soda may seem like a great way to beat the summer heat, but bacteria feeds on sugar – especially on your teeth and gums. It can lead to cavities and contribute to plaque buildup. Do your mouth and the rest of your body a favor by drinking unsweetened iced tea and sugar-free sodas instead.

· Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated during hot summer months isn’t only essential for your entire body, but particularly for your oral health. Dry mouth or a low saliva level increases your risk of cavities and makes your gums more susceptible to bacteria. Refresh your mouth and replenish your body’s fluid reserves throughout the day by drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water.

· Eat sensibly. Instead of indulging in typical summer fare – fried foods, charred meats, hot dogs, ice cream, snow cones, and the like – feast on fresh, delicious and healthy foods like local fruits and vegetables. Not only will this feed your body, but it will also help to keep your teeth and gums in great shape. And if you do indulge, try to keep it to a minimum for optimum health.

· Visit your dentist regularly. Regular checkups and cleanings are an important part of maintaining your dental health. Don’t put off seeing your dentist just because it’s summertime. Any time of year is the right time to make an appointment. If you’re going to be away on vacation or if family activities are taking up more of your time, call your dentist’s office and schedule a visit that accommodates your schedule.
