Sedation Dentistry: Your Anxiety-Free Dental Care Option

March 3, 2020

Today’s dentistry is different than dentistry of yesteryear. Dentists can now provide the treatment you need with minimal discomfort, thanks to sedation dentistry.

Dentists, like Dr. Mark A. Marion, are utilizing sedation dentistry not just for extensive dental procedures, but also for routine checkups and cleanings. Let’s talk about how this method works so you’ll never dread another dental appointment again.

How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?

Sedation dentistry can be provided via nitrous oxide (inhalation sedation), oral sedation, or IV sedation.

Inhalation sedation or “happy air” is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide that are breathed through a nose piece. This is a lighter form of sedation that makes a child or adult feel relaxed, at ease. After using this treatment, you will feel completely normal and able to drive yourself when leaving our practice.

Pain is blocked with IV sedation, and the patient loses partial awareness but can respond to verbal commands by the dentist. The dentist is free to complete a procedure without fear of causing the patient pain or anxiety. The patient may experience the feeling of pressure, but without pain. You may or may not remember anything about the procedure once it’s over.

Why Should I Have Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation therapy is the answer for many patients who are fearful of dental procedures of all kinds, including cleanings. Just knowing that sedation is an option can help a dental patient feel more in control of their visit and less anxious.

At Marion Smile Center, we offer sedation dentistry. You can request to be placed under sedation at any time during the visit – it doesn’t have to be in the beginning of the appointment. You should never feel that you are “stuck.” Your dental team wants you to be comfortable during your visit.

During every routine dental checkup, Dr. Marion can diagnose and treat any issues that are affecting your oral health. If you are fearful of a procedure that your dentist wants to perform, speak up. If you have anxiety regarding your diagnosis or to the treatment plan, explain that to your dentist. The dentist will go over your options for sedation dentistry.

Before the dentist agrees to performing sedation, it is important that the patient inform the dentist of any existing conditions and medications. Either or both of these factors may affect your treatment and may therefore influence which method of sedation the dentist chooses to use for you.
