Zelienople Gum Therapy

At Marion Smile Center in Zelienople, Pennsylvania, Dr. Mark A. Marion and our dental hygienists provide expert diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, or gum disease.

Gum disease begins when plaque forms on the teeth, building up tartar at the gum line. This tartar is removed during regular visits to our office. Without routine cleanings, tartar can grow and spread below your gums and onto your tooth’s root, where plaque is much more difficult to remove.

Early Stage Gum Disease

Early gum disease is called gingivitis. It causes the gums to become red, swollen and tender. They may bleed easily. A professional cleaning or improved dental hygiene at home can reverse gingivitis. If untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontal disease. Some obvious symptoms may include bright red or purple gums, swollen gums, bleeding, loose teeth and bad breath; whereas some cases are asymptomatic.

Advanced Gum Disease

Advanced stages of Gum Disease may result in tooth loss, abscessed teeth, or infection of the jaw bone. In fact, periodontal disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

If left untreated, gum disease can have a systemic effect on the body’s organ systems, causing serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and other conditions. It may also contribute to pre-term birth.

Caring for your gum health not only ensures strong teeth and gums, but contributes to the health of your entire body.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Gum disease is diagnosed by multiple assessments. We record gum measurements, bleeding, review bone levels on radiographs, and evaluate the bacteria present in plaque. The microscope slide helps us evaluate the type of pathogenic bacteria that cause gum disease.

Depending on how advanced the spread of infection is in your gums, treatments may include:

  • Gum Therapy to remove plaque and tartar from both the surface of the tooth as well as the root.
  • Antimicrobial irrigation
  • Depending on the type of bacteria, based on the MyPerioPath report from Oral DNA Labs, oral antibiotics
  • Antibiotics applied to the site of infection and an antimicrobial solution is pushed into the infected gums with a special high-pressure instrument to fight the bacteria that contribute to gum disease.
  • Tooth extraction and surgical treatment (advanced gum disease).
